Garden Fairies and Gleeful Nonsense

I think we should all dream of fairies at the bottom of our gardens. Why? Because it brings a sense of wonder to a harsh world, and serves as a distraction during turbulent times such as they are right now in 2026.

The world at large might be losing its mind, but we don’t have to.

Despite all the chaos and confusion, the sun still rises each morning, and sets each evening to be replaced by the moon in all its mystery.

The flowers still bloom.

The birds still sing.

The kookaburras still laugh.

The cicadas still carry on with their rasping hum that rises and falls.

The frogs in the pond still croak.

The trees still sway when kissed by gentle breezes.

When the rains come, the soil is revitalised and the grass grows.

Nature is grand. We must never forget this.

I felt compelled to write something more whimsical because the outside tech-satiated world tries to compress much of the beauty we think we cannot see, but really can. It is easy to be drawn in to the doom and gloom, but we must resist with all of our might.

To that end, I thought a nursery rhyme would lighten our loads. I mean, these beautiful vintage and soothing little stories cannot possibly be just for the children! Remember, as parents, we read them to our little ones often enough, and I’m sure we gleaned as much enjoyment from telling them as they did from hearing them and seeing our faces light up with gleeful expression!

‘Hey, diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran after the spoon.‘

This poem is part of a collection of nonsense vignettes that delight children and adults alike. They are memorable more for being easily recalled and repeated over and over than for any deeper meaning. But that is what makes them so much fun.

Just like the fairies seeking little treasures by the river, and the butterflies flitting here and there, so, too, does the sight of a cow jumping over the moon and a dish chasing a spoon add to more blissful moments in life.

And there is nothing wrong with that!
