The Chair in the Corner: A Poem

I thought I saw you there today

Sitting in the rocking chair,

In the big room downstairs

Where I always brushed your hair.

I briefly stopped and looked,

But I knew it couldn’t be;

Shapes were playing tricks again

By the light through the trees.

The sun was shining through, though,

The way you used to enjoy

As it moved and danced about

And you would shout out, Ahoy!

I wonder what you thought

Sitting, rocking and watching

As we all went about our day.

I wish I’d done less dashing.

Then I caught myself still staring

At the empty space you’ve left.

And something inside me stirred -

That pain of feeling bereft.

Not just for your absence,

But for all the things you knew;

And the times we didn’t notice.

I’m so sorry - I know now what is true.
